This role focuses on our Mobile application, which allows students to access the power of Blackboard's solutions anytime, anywhere. You'll help with building this student-specific mobile app that gives learners the information they want, the connections they crave, and the personalization they demand, on the go. Through our Mobile Apps & Backend Applications solutions, we are aiming to build a better education experience for everyone by extending institutional resources to meet the growing needs of learners. 

 

As Staff Software Engineer, you will have primary accountability to improve/enhance the application architecture and provide technical guidance to the team on development and support of backend applications. This includes anything between complex groups of back-end services for mobile counterparts. In addition to that, you will be responsible for designing and developing these applications and coordinating with the rest of the team working on different layers of the infrastructure. Thus, a commitment to collaborative problem solving, sophisticated design, and product quality is essential. 

 

Specific responsibilities will include: 

  • Developing and maintaining effective relationships with other team members to understand requirement and functionality of the system 
  • Collaborating closely with the Architects, Product Owner, QA team & SRE to govern intake and scheduling of projects and delivery of solutions 
  • Contributing in all phases of the development lifecycle  
  • Translating application storyboards and use cases into functional applications 
  • Designing, building, and maintaining efficient, reusable, and reliable applications 
  • Ensuring the best possible performance, quality, and responsiveness of the applications 
  • Identifying bottlenecks and bugs, and devising solutions to these problems 
  • Helping maintain code quality, organization, and automatization  
  • Designing the AWS environment from a holistic point of view, ensuring it meets all of the company's requirements 
  • Carrying out deployment, maintenance, monitoring, and management tasks within this implemented AWS structure
  • Overseeing application security 

 

The Candidate:

Required skills/qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's/master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or relevant degree  
  • 8-12+ years of relevant experience
  • Proven hands-on Software Development experience 
  • Proven working experience in Java development 
  • Hands-on experience designing and developing applications using Java EE platforms 
  • Object Oriented analysis and design using common design patterns
  • Profound insight of Java and JEE internals (Classloading, Memory Management, Transaction management etc.)  
  • Strong experience with Spring and Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Data, Spring Security 
  • Experience with Web Services (JSON, REST, JAX-RS, Spring based REST services) 
  • Experience with at least one of the development tools like Git, Gradle, Maven, Sonar, Artifactory, etc. 
  • GitHub and Continuous integration using Jenkins 
  • Experience with web application servers like Tomcat, JBoss, etc. 
  • Experience with test-driven development, code testability standards, Junit/Mockito 
  • Experience with DevOps practices and CICD model of development 
  • Good understanding of OOP, design patterns, and industry best practices 
  • Agile project experience along with working on Agile tools like JIRA/Confluence 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills 

 

Preferred skills/qualifications: 

  • Good knowledge of scripting and working in a Linux environment 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and time management skills 
  • Good knowledge of AWS serverless application model and infrastructure as a code 
  • Good knowledge of Python programming language 
  • Good knowledge of Angular and React frameworks 
  • Good knowledge of Mobile application development
