Blackboard’s Internal Communications Director will play an integral role in identifying opportunities to strengthen employee engagement and driving efforts to enhance employee understanding of the corporate strategy. As a key member of the Global Communications, Brand and Events team, the Internal Communications Director will play a leadership role in creating, shaping, and managing a robust internal communications and employee engagement program for a global workforce of over 1,500 employees.

In this role, you will focus on developing communications and messaging to foster greater community and increase brand ambassadorship among a geographically diverse employee base. You will lead and manage efforts to communicate organizational goals and initiatives and identify ways to increase exposure for activities that increase awareness and engagement. You will also focus on communications to support change management processes at the company. You will also be responsible for fostering a two-way exchange between the employee base and management.

The successful candidate must be able to function as a leader and individual contributor, but also as part of a multi-functional team of stakeholders including the company’s leadership team, Human Resources, Corporate Strategy and Global Communications. This position reports to the Vice President of Global Communications, Brand and Events.

Specific responsiblities will include:

  • Developing and managing strategic plan for internal communications and employee engagement
  • Working with Global Communications, HR, and executive teams to craft messaging and communications that foster employee engagement through understanding the company vision and strategy
  • Identifying ways to increase/improve Blackboard’s reputation through brand ambassadorship across employee base; executing on these plans and working with cross-company teams when warranted
  • Providing internal communications support for the CEO and leaderships team; creating consistency in messaging across business lines
  • Creating messaging and communications to support change management around new strategies and changes to company structure and process
  • Managing and developing messaging for key communications vehicles including company Intranet, live employee/quarterly events, etc.
  • Helping to develop and manage company-wide communications policy and governance process
  • Supporting related communications activities where needed including public relations and external communications, executive speaking, and brand activation
  • This role may require occasional travel, up to 25%

 

The Candidate:

Required skills/qualifications:

  • 12+ years of communications experience, preferably employee communications in an agency or corporate environment
  • Excellent writing, editing, spelling/grammar, messaging, and positioning creation skills
  • Experience in message development and communications planning
  • Experience with internal and/or external communications supporting company activities including M&A, reorganization, and change management
  • Experience shaping/managing corporate communications policy
  • Experience managing key infrastructure including company Intranet, HTML publishing, social tools, etc.
  • Ability to build trust and productive working relationships with senior-level executives and key stakeholders
  • Ability to transform complex ideas into accessible, reader-friendly communications
  • Ability to manage mulitple time-sensitive assignments simultaneously
  • Experience managing at least one individual
  • Strategic, creative, and disciplined; enjoys having a strong role in the development of communications while executing consistently and independently
  • Strong personal leadership style, comfortable with change, and ability to thrive in a highly agile and collaborative environment
  • Driven, high-energy self-starter; comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Embraces creativity with a data-driven mindset
  • Impeccable work ethic

 

Preferred skills/qualifications:

This position can be remote based within the broader Washington-DC metro area. This individual will need to work in our Reston office location as needed.
