This position is part of our User Experience & Design (UXD) organization, which plays a critical role in defining,designing,and developing Blackboard’s products and solutions.Our diverse and talented team is made up of user experience and design professionals who work across our product portfolios and web and mobile platforms to champion best-in-class design leadership throughout Blackboard.Our team believes that user experiences are as much about behavior and emotion as they are about usability, utility, and accessibility.



In this role you will lead and manage a team of UX design professionals focused on the continued growth of Blackboard’s Learning Management System, Teaching & Learning tools & platforms, analytics and mobile applications. You will direct product and UI/UX design activities and ensure operational success on cross-functional product development teams. We’re looking for an experienced people manager to lead and manage all aspects of staff development, budgeting, tactical and strategic design, and user research with a strong emphasis on growing and mentoring the team.

The UX Product Design Manager is an experienced design professional who knows what it takes to build and cultivate a high-performing UI/UX design team. You will be responsible for nurturing career growth and fostering a culture of inclusion and continuous learning. This is a highly visible and key leadership role where you will interact with stakeholders and management across the company and will work closely with the Sr. Director, Product Design
to develop and implement strategies to improve the User Experience & Design Team’s positioning, processes, and workflows. Additionally, this role is expected to collaborate well and communicate effectively with cross-functional partners in product management, engineering, marketing, and strategy to advocate for the team, mitigate blockers and set the team up for success.



This is a full-time position with a competitive salary based on your experience.



Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Providing resource planning and direction to the UX team and overseeing project management to ensure the team is supported, staffed appropriately, and focused on priorities
  • Helping to improve, develop, and maintain UXD’s tools and systems to provide consistency in how the team works to ensure the highest design standards
  • Maintaining a holistic view of Blackboard’s portfolio and advocating for an integrated, best in class user experience across platforms and products
  • Managing the timely reporting and delivery of all UX/UI artifacts and rituals to support the entire agile product development lifecycle with a focus on outcomes vs. outputs
  • Promoting user-centricity and design-thinking methodologies with a keen focus on problem-solving, experimentation, user-research, and design reviews
  • Supporting and developing the team’s ideas and helping drive innovation within the team and with key stakeholders by representing the voice of the user and balancing business goals
  • Continuously striving to improve design operations by optimizing the team’s efficiency and effectiveness in user research, concept-development, prototyping, design production, etc.
  • Helping to recruit talent globally, streamlining the onboarding process, managing a remote team, and establishing the team’s goals and key performance indicators
  • Mentoring and fostering career growth for direct reports and helping the team maximize its full potential and value
  • Being a thought leader within the UXD organization to influence the quality of design, design strategy, and design leadership throughout the company



The Candidate:

Required skills/qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Design, Technology, or related field
  • 8+ years of diversified UX/design management experience preferably with SAAS or technology products or equivalent experience
  • Experience building and scaling design operations with a passion for operational excellence and strong organizational skills
  • A strong command of advanced design principles and proven ability to execute best practices
  • Ability to inspire, motivate a lead a diversified team to achieve design excellence
  • A compelling and informed point of view on modern, effective design processes and systems
  • Evidence of successful collaboration with product management and product development teams
  • Thorough understanding of prototyping methodologies and practices, user research methodologies, and A/B test planning/execution
  • Ability to effectively influence and communicate cross-functionally with all levels, verbally & in writing and communicate the value of design directions and strategy
  • Outstanding facilitation, interviewing, and presentation skills that bring diverse stakeholders together for problem-solving, ideation, workshops, planning, etc.
  • Experience hiring, managing, mentoring, and developing team members
  • Expertise in UX, digital interface, interaction, and visual design
  • Excellent team player and collaborator that brings people together for common goals
  • Ability to represent the UXD team throughout the company and to external stakeholders



Preferred skills/qualifications:

  • Strong systems thinking approach
  • Growth mindset with strong ability to galvanize and drive change
  • Experience designing for both customer and users
  • Experience collaborating with accessibility and content pillars
  • Previous experience in the education industry and with e-learning technologies
  • Background in user research that informs design exploration and solutions
