As Senior Staff Software Engineer – Security Architecture, you will be responsible for leading the adoption and compliance of consistent SaaS-based security and privacy architecture across all our products and platforms. This role will be instrumental in leading Blackboard to be a provider of the most comprehensive education technology platform available.



The successful candidate will interface closely with the Chief Architect, application and enterprise architects, as well as product development, SRE, and security teams and coordinate security and privacy standards across a broad set of products and services. They will partner with the various stakeholders to advise on the best strategy for security and privacy architecture, aid in research of new technologies and provide crucial input into the design of technology for new service development.



Successful candidates for this position will have a passion for technology and architecture and understand how to apply technology to business objectives and client needs. They will have a wide and diverse skillset, adaptability to change, and strong leadership skills. In addition, they will show strong communication skills, a proven track record of building consensus across larger organizations, and the ability to foster strong cross-team collaboration on technical topics.



Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Researching and inventorying existing infrastructure used across all product teams
  • Developing security guidelines and standards in close collaboration with our Security team
  • Researching emerging technologies and standards and evaluating potential adoption
  • Collaborating with teams on emerging security and privacy needs, developing requirements and plans for adoption of new services
  • Aiding other architects and development teams in the design of new services
  • Working closely with security team to ensure that security controls are implemented consistently across the portfolio
  • Communicating architectural plans and changes to various stakeholders in the organization
  • Creating technical documents for internal use as well as client facing purposes



The Candidate:

Required skills/qualifications:

  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent
  • 10+ years of experience working as a DevOps engineer, software engineer with focus on security, or IT operations with at least 4 years in a senior engineering, architecture, or technical management role
  • Mastery of various security areas (governance, risk management, architecture and engineering, identity management, security assessment and operations)
  • Experience with security in public cloud providers such as AWS or Azure
  • Experience developing standards in collaboration with stakeholders and driving adoption across organizations
  • Strong problem-solving ability in large, complex systems
  • A passion for innovation, learning, and sharing and knowledge



Preferred skills/qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience leading organizations through technology change and adoption of significant new infrastructure technologies
  • Experience with security standards like FedRAMP and ISO 27000
  • Experience implementing data privacy frameworks such as GDPR or CCPA
  • Security certification such as CISSP, AWS Certified – Security Specialty, or equivalent
  • Experience in the education technology market
